Howard Bryant, an ESPN.com senior writer and frequent panelist on "The Sports Reporters", was arrested on Saturday on charges including domestic assault and resisting arrest.

In Greenfield (Mass.) District Court on Monday, Bryant pleaded not guilty to domestic assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest charges. (NECN) - ESPN senior writer Howard Bryant is free tonight after being arrested over the weekend for domestic assault and battery, in a case his attorney says could have been race-related.

Massachusetts State police spokesman David Procopio says Bryant was arrested Saturday night after witnesses reported he had grabbed a woman by the throat and was pinning her against a vehicle in the town ofBuckland.

Procopio says Bryant was charged with assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest after refusing to put his hands behind his back and trying to pull away from a state trooper who responded to the call.

MIAMI — A pair of independent sources have confirmed to the Sun Sentinel that veteran point guard Mike Bibby is leaning toward signing with the Miami Heat in the wake of Monday's buyout from the Washington Wizards.

The Wizards have reached a buyout agreement with point guard Mike Bibby. Bibby's agent, David Falk, met with Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld on Monday at Verizon Center to get the deal finalized.

The terms have not been disclosed, but a person with knowledge of the situation said Bibby sacrificed a "substantial" amount of money for his freedom. Another source said that Bibby surrendered his entire $6.2 millionsalary next season. This would be a crushing blow to the Boston Celtics, not only would they be missing out on two key additions, the Miami Heat would be addressing two areas of need. The swing could be enough to catapult the Heat over the Celtics once and for all. The Heat have shown an ability to cruise past lesser teams relying on the their Big Three, but have struggled when playing an elite team that features an above average guard and/or center. Oscars: Backstage, NYU student already has 73 congratulatory text messages

Luke Matheny, the surprise winner who took home the prize for live action short with "God of Love" on Sunday, is a graduate student in New York University's film program. So it's safe to say he was out of his comfort zone during the star-studded event.

On the red carpet before the Oscars telecast, Matheny admitted he was "standing behind Robert Downey Jr, trying to get on TV."

And at the nominees luncheon earlier this month, the student was equally star-struck.

"When you're in a room and there's one famous person, it's very distracting," he said backstage. "But the nominees luncheon was wall-to-wall, and I kind of clicked into this other level of reality."

Sophomore Jake Waterman and junior Kevin McCarthy know they will return to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships for the second consecutive year. That’s why Evelyn Martinez is fighting her naturally frizzy hair.

“I’m always straightening my hair and buying all kinds of creams to make it straight,” Martinez said.

Evelyn turned to what some call a miracle hair straightener. It goes by many names, such as “Brazilian Blowout”, “Brazilian Keratin Treatment”, or “Brazilian Hair Straightening.”

But the popular hair treatment is being tied to a harmful, potentially cancer-causing chemical. The product is still used every day, but it is now under federal investigation.

CNN BREAKING: Four U.S. citizens on a yacht hijacked by Somali pirates last week are dead, a U.S. defense official says.

Four Americans captured by Somali pirates while sailing in the Indian Ocean have been shot and killed, NBC News reported Tuesday.

The two couples, Phyllis Macay, 59, and Robert Riggle, 67, of Seattle, and the yacht’s owners Jean and Scott Adam of California were on an around-the-world sailing trip when they were captured by pirates Friday.

Military officials told NBC News that about 1 a.m. ET shots were heard aboard the yacht. Negotigations had been under way with the pirates at the time.

The officials said U.S. military personnel boarded the yacht and discovered all four hostages had been shot by their captors.

PM: 'This may be New Zealand's darkest day' as quake kills 65

A powerful earthquake ripped through Christchurch, New Zealand, on Tuesday afternoon, killing at least 65 people as it toppled buildings, buckled roads and damaged cathedrals.

"This is just heartbreaking," said New Zealand Prime Minister John Key during a trip to the area to survey the damage from the 6.3-magnitude quake. "This may be New Zealand's darkest day."

Frantic rescuers scrambled to reach those trapped in the rubble hours after the earthquake struck. Scores of dazed, bleeding residents wandered streets strewn with debris and chunks of concrete.

A woman atop a pile of rubble tearfully pleaded the crowd to help her.

"They are coming for you," a bystander said.
The quake, which struck during the city's lunchtime rush, was followed by a series of aftershocks.

Key said the priority was to rescue people trapped in buildings. The number of injuries was unclear, but the final death toll may be much higher, according to authorities.

Former U of L basketball player, Troy Jackson died Saturday at age 35. Jackson played for coach Denny Crum from 1996 to 1998. He later played on the And-1 Streetball Mixtape Tour.

Jackson is the brother of former NBA star and current NBA TV analyst, Mark Jackson and is the uncle of Mark Jackson, Jr. who plays on the current U of L team.

The University of Louisville has not yet released a statement regarding Troy's passing, but a basketball web site reported that the former Cardinal died in his sleep.

Around noon Saturday, as teams made final preparations in the Daytona International Speedway garage area for Sunday’s Daytona 500, Eddie Wood, co-owner of the Wood Brothers Racing team, answered a call on his cell phone.

He moved between two transporters in the noisy garage area to hear better. The call was from a long-time friend of Wood, retired Ford Racing director Dan Rivard.

Rivard wanted to talk about Trevor Bayne, the Woods’ new driver. Rivard said he had been watching on television and wanted Wood to know how impressed he was with Bayne’s driving. Wood said Rivard had compared Bayne favorably with former Ford racing icon Jackie Stewart, an international motorsports superstar.

Abernathy was caught on surveillance video prancing around in his birthday suit inside the Mariner's Cove Club House in the Jan. 7 incident after getting in through an unlocked sliding glass door.

At the heart of the LAPD double-homicide investigation featured in this week's "48 Hours Mystery: Playing with Fire" are nearly $1 million worth of jewelry ripped-off when the federal government seized the assets of Wall Street Ponzi-schemer Mark Yagalla.

Police believe that Yagalla's girlfriend, Playboy model Sandy Bentley, and her next boyfriend, nightclub doorman Michael Tardio, ripped off the jewels and planned to sell them for cash on the black market.

Tardio had no experience as a criminal and this foray into the Los Angeles underworld resulted in his murder and the murder of his best friend, Chris Monson.

The two were presumably executed when they went to sell the jewels by the person(s) who they mistakenly thought were going to pay them $1 million.
