I receive a lot of requests concerning the Skirvin Hotel in Downtown OKC. Travelers seek rooms that have a bit more to offer outside of luxurious accommodations.

Perhaps they have heard about the rumored tale of “Effie” a distraught mother and secret lover plunging to her death out of pure uncertainty and heartache? Maybe they heard the hotels haunting tales because the NY KNICKS & LAKERS were so afraid that they lost a game over it? Maybe people are intrigued by phantom “ladies of the night” potentially visiting their room? No matter what the reason is, there is no denying that the Skirvin Hotel has a haunting past. LIRR still suspended; MTA website sluggish

Long Island Rail Road passenger service was still suspended in both directions Monday morning as the nation's busiest commuter rail system worked to clear snow from its tracks.

"Right now, we have no estimate of when service will resume," spokesman Sam Zambuto said. "We're continuing to work at clearing the third rail and switches."

When service does resume, Zambuto said it would operate on a holiday schedule. Service was still suspended as of 9 a.m. Monday.

A woman suicide bomber detonated her explosives-laden vest in a crowded aid distribution centre in northwest Pakistan today, killing at least 41 people and wounding dozens waiting for food stamps, officials said.

The attack appeared to be the first suicide bombing staged by a woman in Pakistan, and it underscored the resilience of militant groups in the country's tribal belt despite ongoing military operations against them.

The bomb hit the main city in Bajur, a region near the Afghan border where the military has twice declared victory over Taliban and al-Qaeda insurgents.

It also came a day after some 150 militants killed 11 soldiers in a coordinated assault in a neighboring region where the army also has carried out operations.

The Catholic Church has moved to clarify remarks made by the Pope which suggested contraceptives could be used to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

The Vatican's moral watchdog, the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, issued a statement insisting some commentators had misunderstood and misrepresented the Pope's remarks in a book-length interview released last month entitled Light of the World.

Bernard Madoff’s victims got a glimmer of good news yesterday, as officials won a record $7.2 billion settlement with the estate of philanthropist Jeffry Picower, a client of the convicted swindler who received false profits over 35 years, money that actually belonged to other investors lured into the scheme.

Together with other settlements reached in recent days, including $625 million from Boston philanthropist Carl Shapiro, the money available to repay some of the investors’ losses is growing. But many former Madoff clients still feel deeply singed two years after the massive fraud, and doubt they will ever recover their money.

WABC weather gal Heidi Jones suspended after 'rape' lie to cops

WABC/Channel 7 weather babe Heidi Jones has been suspended by the station pending an investigation after she was arrested for perpetrating the ultimate snow job -- falsely claiming to cops that a man had tried to rape her while she was jogging in Central Park.

Jones, who anchors the station's weekend evening weather coverage and fills in on "Good Morning America," was charged on Monday with filing a false report, a Class A misdemeanor. If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail or a $1,000 fine.

The word that comes to mind when thinking of Mayor Tim Davlin is “charm.”

Through a very tough campaign that got him into office in 2003, and as unpredictable problems hit him and Springfield during his years in office, Davlin almost always came up smiling. It was hard for those around him not to join in.

I know Davlin viewed the mayor’s office, at least at first, as a place not only to get things done, but to have fun. And I was sometimes surprised at how infectious that attitude was.

I remember stopping by a Davlin fundraiser at Knights of Columbus Council 364. Cars filled nearly all of the icy field far beyond the abundant parking lot, and inside, a very large room was packed. In a move to bolster front-court depth and save about $8 million in salary and luxury taxes, the Lakers agreed to send Sasha Vujacic and a 2011 first-round draft pick to New Jersey as part of a three-team trade that would bring veteran forward Joe Smith to the Lakers.

As the fifth guard in Phil Jackson's four-guard rotation, Vujacic had seen his playing time reduced to almost nothing this season. The trade is contingent upon Smith, 35, passing a physical.

Big Ten reveals new divisions, names trophy after Stagg and Paterno

It might seem that Penn State coach Joe Paterno has been around as long as college football pioneer Amos Alonzo Stagg, and thanks to the Big Ten Conference's decision to combine past and present as it moves forward into its expanded, 12-member lineup for the 2011 football season, those two coaching icons will be forever linked.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany revealed aspects of the new-look Big Ten during a teleconference yesterday, which included the unveiling of an updated logo and names for the two six-team divisions, as well as for 18 football awards, all of which are meant to honor some of the more noteworthy figures in the league's tradition-encrusted, 115-year history.

Mike Hatch's daughter commits suicide

Anne Hatch, the younger daughter of former Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch, was found dead Sunday evening in her Chicago condo, officials said Monday.

Cook County Medical Examiner's officials said that Hatch, 27, committed suicide by hanging. She was pronounced dead at 4:52 p.m. Sunday.

Police said she was discovered in her Michigan Avenue home by a building employee who was checking on her well being, according to WBBM Radio.

Metrodome Owners May Know Tonight If Stadium Can Host Vikings-Bears Game

Stadium officials in Minnesota may know by tonight whether the Metrodome’s collapsed roof can be repaired in time to host next week’s scheduled National Football League game between the Vikings and Chicago Bears.

Roy Terwilliger, chairman of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, said workers from Amherst, New York-based Birdair Inc. were arriving this afternoon to survey the damage and determine the cost and time required for repairs.

“Our goal is to keep that game here in Minneapolis,” Terwilliger said in a telephone interview.

Jon Gruden: 2001 Miami Hurricanes Best College Football Team Ever

As an unabashed Canes fan, you know I’m not going to miss an opportunity to give some love to my Hurricanes, especially when it was prompted by somebody else. After Andre Johnson caught a touchdown prior to halftime of the Ravens-Texans Monday night game, analyst and former coach Jon Gruden began praising Miami.

Introducing what seemed to be a prepared piece by ESPN, Chucky said that the 2001 Miami team was the best college football team ever. He pointed out how 38 of the 89 players on the team were drafted, including 17 in the first round. They showed a team photo and spot-shadowed Andre Johnson and Ed Reed (both of whom were playing in the Monday night game) and mentioned Willis McGahee, who was also playing in the game. Other running backs on that Miami team were Frank Gore, Clinton Portis, and Najeh Davenport. In addition to Andre Johnson, Santana Moss, Jeremy Shockey, and Kellen Winslow II caught passes from Ken Dorsey. Defensive stars included Jonathan Vilma, D.J. Williams, Vince Wilfork, and Antrel Rolle and Sean Taylor as backups.

Big Ten Unveils New Logo/Divisions

The Big Ten Conference today made several announcements that complete a series of decisions prompted by the upcoming addition of the University of Nebraska – Lincoln as the conference’s 12th member school. The conference revealed a new logo to be used for all sports beginning with the 2011-12 academic year and also unveiled names for its two football divisions and a list of names for 18 trophies to honor coaches, teams and student-athletes starting with the 2011 football season.
